Foreknowledge, Predestination and Free Will

For years, religious sectors have been debating about three things: Foreknowledge, Predestination and Free Will. It seems impossible to have free will when our life has been predestined. Is free will an illusion? What about the freedom to choose? There are still mind-boggling questions that need clarification.

Foreknowledge

It can be explained like this. You are on a road and there are many vehicles approaching. You saw a child recklessly running towards your direction. As a person who is matured and who has knowledge of things, you know that the child might be hit by a car. It was not orchestrated. But it did happen. God doesn’t control our choices. He gave us free will just like how He gave Adam and Eve a choice. He did not interfere when they were about to eat the fruit of knowledge and evil. God knew that men will fall, so even before then, He knew that He will sacrifice His begotten Son to save mankind from the grips of hell.

Predestinationhappy

Predestination could have multiple interpretations. But if there’s an interpretation that makes sense, it is Calvin and Boettner’s interpretation. God has paved the way for us, so we can be with Him when the time comes. He predestined His Son to give us salvation. He predestined the weak to shame the proud. He predestined His grace to bless men despite their imperfections. According to Calvin and Boettner’s interpretation, predestination is a beautiful thing. God designed a fruitful life. He loves sinners such as gamblers playing las vegas casino statistics, the backsliders, and all other sinners who are ignorant of the truth. He made a way so that these people could be saved.

Free Will

In 2 Peter 3:9, God demonstrated what true free will means. “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” We have the choice to choose Him or continue with our old ways. He won’t impose sinners to repent. He will not destroy the top 10 restaurants in las vegas so just to prevent more people from coming.
